Here are the comments I received on the evaluations for this course at the end of the Fall 2021, 2022, and 2023 Semesters:
- .Professor Reese is a great teacher; he simplified and explained the materials very well. The course won’t be that difficult if you give it enough time by practicing and reviewing the materials regularly.
- I really enjoyed this course and I found the fundamental principles behind portfolio theory and fixed income evaluation to be explained incredibly well and in great detail. The notes were clear and to the point and the exercises wee meaningful and relevant to the course. I found the Stock Trak project to be a bit tangential and difficult to implemement given the time constraints in the class. Trying to implement portfolio theory in a 3-month time period maybe does not confirm the lessons we were taught and investing based on how markets can behave in the short run.
- Although I learned well from the class discussions, I would have liked to have more classroom practice with excel.
- Professor Bill Reese is a very effective instructor. His class has been one of the most efficient learning experiences from my time at Tulane.
- One of the best professors I have ever had – very clear, concise, and direct. Extremely organized course. All materials are available to you, and it’s up to you to succeed. Extremely challenging, but rewarding – I have learned the most in this professors’ classes
- Reese is great, he teaches very clearly and is crystal clear about what is expected and what is not. Material is difficult, so you must stay on top of things, but overall, Reese guides you along to learning the tough material.
- I enjoyed this course and felt like I gained a thorough understanding of portfolio theory and fixed income investments. Since both halves of the course are independent, I would have preferred the content in the opposite order in terms of content and homework difficulty paired with larger assignments like final projects and exams. I know the Stock Trak requires knowledge of portfolio theory, but an overview of the major points I think would have sufficed to get started, and then since we could trade all semester anyway, adjustments could be made as we learned more.
- I think more excel should be taught during this class.
- Professor Reese is one of the most effective professors that I have ever had. He does a great job of breaking down topics covered in class and providing meaningful assignments that are challenging yet beneficial. I have really enjoyed the course. Give him a raise.
- Professor Reese is one of the best professors at Tulane. Not only does he know everything about finance, but he is able to teach it in a digestible manner. He is also INVESTED (lol) in his students’ performance and personal success.
- You will never regret learning from Professor Reese, because he always comes to class prepared and provides you with neat notes. I’ve now grasped both the fundamentals of finance and investments. I wish he could teach more graduate-level courses, and he definitely deserves a teaching award!
- This has been the hardest course I have taken in my professional career. However, it has also been deeply rewarding. I have learned a great deal about the material as well as about myself. Professor Reese’s lectures are fantastic and help illustrate the material. I would like to see more practice problems available to help on the homework assignments and tests so I could better prepare. I would recommend this course and Professor Reese to others.
- Professor Reese is one of those professors that you can tell is a real teacher. Although his exams are very difficult, he has a very well thought-out lesson plan that makes doing well in his class achievable if you pay attention and put the work in.
- Thank you Professor Reese for pushing the students to learn as much as they can, but also being empathetic and understanding. I wish I had more time to study for your class and would have performed better, but everything was great from your end and I am grateful for the learning 🙂
- It will be perfect if principles are associated more with reality, and not just stay in theory.
- Professor Reese is always a go-to strong recommend for professors. He thoroughly explains the content and always makes himself available for further instruction. This course is TOUGH, but important and worthwhile to anyone looking for a finance career. Enjoyed the mix of test, simulation, and paper.
- Challenging course, very informative, Professor Reese is a great teacher, content is difficult.
- Exams are extremely difficult but you know exactly what to expect. The definition of tough but fair. The class website is a great resource and is better than most professor’s Canvas page.
- Professor Reese could teach a dog how to fly a plane if he wanted to
- Enjoyable course. I would have preferred to build my own spreadsheets than use previously created spreadsheets for the homework. I believe it is hard to use other’s spreadsheets and you learn more when you create the spreadsheet yourself.
- This was a challenging semester to be learning anything with Hurricane Ida, especially higher-level portfolio theory and fixed income analysis. But Professor Reese did his best to be as flexible as possible and responded thoroughly and thoughtfully to questions and concerns. The tests were still killer, but I think we’ve come to expect that from Prof. Reese.
